I was very hesitant when I saw the reviews. However, so many times even a great Mexican restaurant only gets 3 stars. It is in the nature of the type of food I guess? We started off with the key lime pie. It was THE best key lime we tasted while we were in Key West, and we tried several. It was the crust. Not like I necessarily have a preference either way, but it was a pastry crust versus a graham cracker crust. It had a great flavor and flakiness to it. I don't usually care about the crust much, but this was one of those that you went for the crust. Because we like dessert first, we then had the salmon and spinach enchiladas. It was more like a Southwestern style where the tortillas were flat instead of rolled. There was not a lot of sauce which I usually would have complained about, but the flavors popped. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal there! Probably the only thing was the service. It seems like they had one guy running way too much. I felt a little sorry for him, but the service was meh.

Not great but not terrible. I think the majority of the problem was that it was so hot we were all cranky and not really in the mood to eat hot heavy food. Stopped in here for dinner, and ended up being seated near the bar. The front area is an open patio that I would imagine has more air flow. We were in the middle, in a covered area with no air. There were fans but they were not pointing so the whole table could cool off, so this resulted in seats being shuffled every so often. Florida summer heat is no joke! We were going to order margaritas until we realized they do not serve liquor. So we ordered sangria. It was ok, again, not great but not terrible. A little pricey for what was basically wine. The food was pretty decent, but nothing exciting. I had the veggie enchiladas with pinto beans and rice, and others at my table split fajitas. Nobody was wowed by their food, but we also had no complaints either. Portions were normal sized and the food was hot when it came out. Service was ok, There was one snafu with the fajitas coming out with the wrong protein. But other than that our server seemed pretty attentive. I think we would've enjoyed our experience more if we weren't seated in the most uncomfortably hot area of the dining room.

I placed an order to-go and made specific orders to have sauces on the side and to have other sauces not included in my food. They completely disregarded the fact that I asked for any of those requests and they just totally drenched my food in those sauces. I called the manager and stated what happened and just said that i am not trying to ruin everyone's day by bringing food back. (which I shouldn't have to, if it was made right) After the phone call, I return to my food, to unsatisfactorily eat my food, only to succumb to a bunch of bones in my burrito. I threw my food away. I'm very disappointed.

If you've traveled to Key West, or know anything about it, you're probably aware of the high prices due to the fact it is a tourist spot. Being on Duval Street, one of the main thoroughfares and one of the most popular ones, is no exception. While my friend and I walked from establishment to establishment, we were having no luck in finding a cheap lunch option under $10. After walking for a while and feeling very hungry, we settled on this Mexican restaurant, although it didn't fit the "$10 and under" criteria. My friend got a beef burrito, and I got the enchiladas verdes, as these were some of the cheapest items we could find on the menu. Although I asked for the food to come spicy, it was not spicy. I asked for hot sauce and used the most potent one available and it was somewhat spicy, but not as spicy as I was hoping. The food was okay but somewhat flavorless and unmemorable. The quality reminded me of that at Chili's. I certainly have had much better, and more authentic. The portion sizes were filling, which was great, and the outdoor seating was cozy and picturesque. You get free chips and salsa as you are seated, but refills will cost you (I believe $3.95 or so per refill, which is quite steep), though drink refills are free. We've learned our lesson: next time, we will eat outside of the city, or at least choose a relatively unknown street within the city, rather than Duval Street, which happens to be the same street Margaritaville is located in, and one of the most popular Fantasy Fest parade streets.

if I was in any other restaurant in this country and a chicken was rooting around under the table, you'd be reading a one star review. That's third world stuff, you guys. Like you'd expect a burning truck tire and a cardboard sign out front to signal the place was open and the drinking water to be served out of a rusty pail. Here it's just charming. Well, maybe not charming...but not a horrible portent. In any case, we had just come from Hemingway's house crawling with six-toed cats...so we were getting accustomed to roaming herds of semi-domesticated island creatures. The food is actually quite good. I had the fish tacos with big hunks of hot, fresh, grilled mahi, served spicy with cool, crisp lettuce on a soft tortilla and a bowl of homemade salsa with chips. Two ice-cold Coronas made this the perfect lunch on a hot Key West afternoon. The front seating area is covered but allows the ocean breeze (and myriad roosters) to pass through unhindered while shielding you from the broiling sun. In hindsight, I wish I'd ordered the chicken tacos as a not-so-subtle message to those entitled birds. Not so smug now, are you b*tches? Beat it.

Not horrible. Just average. I got the Chipotle Chimi - the meat did not have much flavor and the rice was just ok. Another person in my party got chicken quesadilla- she said it was ok but sort of bland. The other person had the chicken fajita burrito- he said was just alright. He put the hot chile sauce on it. He noted that it was chunks of chicken - not shredded as expected - just an FYI. Service is a little lacking. Actually as I write this review a party of six sat down, waited a long time for service and decided to get up and leave. I think next time I will try out the other Mexican restaurant that is on the Keys.

Average Mexican food in the middle of busy Duval street.

Fresh and safe. They are generous with portions and the staff is friendly. Mexicans do not typically cover everything with tons of cheese, that is done in restaurants to appease the American pallet. This restaurant is no different. If you love cheesy nachos they can provide ...fresh chips too. My partner had their mole quesadillas and he said it was a nice combination of flavors, but again, a lot of cheese. Iced tea was freshly brewed and flavorful. I recommend eating here for one of your meals while in the Keys. Indoor and outdoor seating with festive decor, chickens outside add to the island atmosphere! Why don't we have chickens on the mainland???

Gorgeous outside patio with decent food. The prices are really high for what they serve but the items were tasty and well cooked. The grilled shrimp were plump and firm, and the tortilla soup was perfect on the nice cool day. I would recommend just spending the extra money for a pitcher of margarita since it's just a little more than the cost of two separate glasses but can easily pour more than four or five glasses. The two waitstaff members were courteous and checked on us several times and offered to move us inside once it barely started sprinkling.

There aren't many times that you leave a Mexican restaurant and wish you had just went to Wendy's instead. Aside from the fact that is was stifling hot and there aren't enough fans, the food just wasn't very tasty at all.

This place is getting a 3 stars just based on their baja tacos and black beans. Their salsa was just a bowl filled with chunks of tomatoes. Not pureed or seasoned. I don't like tomato chunks so the salsa was not good for me. The place is pretty expensive too for a Mexican place. If you're looking for a cheap little hole in the wall Mexican place, then avoid here. However, the baja tacos and black beans and rice sides were absolutely delicious. It was almost $16 for the entree (expensive) but sooo good! The baja tacos had grilled mahi mahi, onions, and this home made chipotle sauce. Absolutely delicious. The black beans were also well seasoned. Honestly, if it weren't for the tacos and black beans, I would tell someone to ditch this place and find something cheaper. However, if you're looking for good fish tacos, this place is worth going to.

Great place ruined by horrible service. We asked for extra lemons for our water.... Was informed there would be an up charge. Every question was answered by short answers like he was doing us a favor. To the owner.... Be careful of whom you leave in charge of your place

Very good Mexican food conveniently located on Duval Street in KW. Went there for late lunch. Great service. Good food. Salsa with chips good quality. Salsa a little different but in a good way. I had the vegiladas. Very good if not excellent. Verde sauce was exceptional. Wife had fish tacos She gave her entree 3 stars. I give mine 5 so we are settling for compromise of 4 stars together. Mexican food is similar everywhere but here it's different and unique so I highly suggest this place for lunch. Not sure I'd do it for dinner simply because you'd be missing eating at a better one of the nicer restaurants while in beautiful Key West.

I wasn't too excited to eat Mexican in key west, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a snapper dish and my husband got a carne Aseda. Both well made and very flavorful. I also had a key lime marguerite and it wasn't great, seemed pre-made; Limey sugary, not great. Service was good and the environment quite pleasant. Good experience all around.

  • Taste Buds T.

My cousin ordered a Chicken Chipotle Chimi and she could not work her way even through half, while her husband could not stop appreciating his Chicken Ranchero. Justifies the 3 star review! Ambience inside the restaurant keeps up with that of the most happening street on the island. Better Mexican food options exist!

  • Chelsea L.

Order a grilled chicken ranchero. And the marinated sauce was sooooo delicious. Normally I can't finish up my food, but not this time. I ate every thing up.

After being greeted by hostess and seated, I waited 15 minutes and no server approached me. There were only three other tables occupied at 10:30pm on a Saturday night. There was a bartender and three other servers hanging out at bar. They chose not to acknowledge my table so I left. I would give zero stars if that were an option!

  • Elisa M.

The chicken mole was only offered as a quesadilla. I had been craving it so I gave it a shot. The flavor was strangely sweet and had a cinnamon flavor. Not what I was expecting. I'm not much of a sweets person so I think next time I will pass. A better option, not great, would be the fried fish tacos. They were lightly flavored but a nice size portion of fish. It also came with beans and rice unlike my quesadilla. I can't really say I would go back to this cafe for food. The atmosphere was relaxing with the overhanging of vegetation. The service was kind. One thing that I didn't like was the inclusion of an 18% tip on the bill. We were a party of 2 during lunch and hardly overwhelming with a 2 entrée order and a coffee. If the service had been poor I would have given 2 stars.

Food was pretty good.. ordered spinach mushroom quesadillas. Very crisp and tasty. My husband had the seafood vera cruz which he enjoyed. Nice outdoor patio. Key lime pie is delicious. On the downside. ...service is so slow. The bathroom was gross and small. One stall bathroom ...people waiting in line to use it.. really? For a restaurant this size? I've been to nicer bathrooms at a gas station. I dont want to spend this much time wsiting to use the bathroom....seriously. . I dont see myself going back.

  • Mima H.

Got the seafood velacruz and I made the mistake of telling them to make it spicy. It was soooo spicy my lips got numb from eating it so I sent it back. Then I got the mushroom and onion quesadillas which was awesome. The seafood velacruz was really good though. Margarita was okay. Dessert, forgot the name. Friend ice cream wasn't that great. :/ overall good dinner, friendly service.

Great restaurant. They have outdoor seating with fans. Nice decorations. Great service!

  • Dan K.

Looked like a good place right off of Duval street. Seating was nice in an outdoor patio like area. Yes, I know fresh salsa is supposed to have fresh lime juice in it. However, all I tasted was lime juice with this salsa with maybe a hint of cilantro. Chips were good. Ordered a margarita on the rocks thinking it would be made from scratch. Nope, it was from a mix and really watered down. Very very bland. One of the worst margaritas I've ever had. Had the Baja tacos. On the plus side they looked really good and they did not skimp on the grilled Mahi Mahi. The fish had nice grill marks and was tender and moist. However, the taco itself was very bland and had very little flavor. Rice with black beans on the side were OK. Daughter and wife also had the Baja tacos and both had the same opinion that I did. Waiters worked hard and were attentive so that was a plus. However, overall it was really disappointing.

Average Mexican food. Had to go there because there werent many other options that had tables available for us dinner time on duval street. Service was below avg, everyone was telling everyone to do something but noone was actually doing :P But we did get our food and desert (completely different from what was described)

  • Jim M.

Keep walking.... nothing impressive here. My crew and I ate our way around Key West for 2 days and all agreed this was our one poor choice. Is it edible? Yes. Will you be impressed? Nope. Guac probably came pre-made. Margaritas from a mix. Reminded me of a Chi Chi's or an On the Border.

Truly fantastic food and wonderful atmosphere. Attentive staff. Have eaten here on all 3 of my trips to KW. The fish tacos are excellent!

After having seafood all week we decided we wanted Mexican for our last night in Key West. Looked on Yelp and there weren't many to choose from. Sooooo glad we picked this place. I highly recommend it! It was sweltering hot and there was quaint outdoor seating so we asked for the coolest seat. We were not disappointed- the fans blew on us the whole time and we didn't notice the heat. The salsa was my favorite kind- obviously fresh made and with cilantro. Yum yum. I couldn't decide if I wanted a sangria or margarita so I went with the waiter's suggestion of a sangria. It was a treat since I don't drink often and they were very tasty. I ordered the veggie quesadilla and loved them. My husband had a few bites and said it was the best quesadilla he'd ever had. He ordered the chicken fajitas and was also good. I'm making myself hungry just remembering our fabulous dinner!

It was good. Definitely over priced. We wanted the outdoor place on the corner but it was cold and there was no seating. Id go here again.

Stopped in during a quick day trip to Key West. It looked busy, enough to be good--but not totally slammed. We had water & chips/salsa while we waited for food. My order came out incorrectly, but the kind server worked quickly to make it right. The food was authentic Mexican & delicious. Prices were fair for the location. Service was good. Overall a good choice for a lunch or dinner on Duval Street.

The guacamole and salsa were super fresh. Great atmosphere and a knowledgeable server who wasn't even a native. Fish tacos were spectacular. I miss key west!

Living on Duval Street has its merits. After a long hard night of drinking and waking up at the crack of noon I crave something Mexican and I crave something deep fried. So on a recent hungover Saturday I heading into the Old Town Mexican Cafe for lunch. Since I'm a psychotic loner I sat at the tiny tiny bar in the back of the Patio with my Key West Citizen paper ready to wage war on the crossword puzzle. Peter the bartender took care of me, and quickly returned with my hydrating Iced Tea and some delish chips and salsa. The salsa is fresh and they use cilantro... yum. I ordered the Chicken Chipolte Chimi and it was out before I could finish reading the Citizens Voice portion of the paper. It's a big fat square fried to a golden brown. I tucked in and it was soooooo good. Chicken, cheese, beans, a mild spiciness and Peter was Johnny on the spot with the iced tea refills. I ate the whole thing. I always order the same thing and I am always a happy camper. The only reason I can't give OTMC 5 stars is because lunch shouldn't cost over $20, even on Duval Street. If they offered a locals discount I might show up for that delish Chimi more often.

What's not to like? Great patio - removed from the street with fans to move the air and lively Latin music. Cold beer Fresh house-made salsa Terrific fish tacos. Friendly and quick service.

  • Krystal M.

Rude people working here. Dont even waste your time. The place opened at 11:30 so we waited for it to open and once they did, one of the servers said (in a very snotty way) "wow you guys must be hungry huh". Like, excuse me? He then ignored us and sat someone else and never came back to see if we wanted to be seated. Apparently they do not want our money if they are choosing to treat customers like that. Dont even waste your time. SOOOOOO NOT WORTH IT!!!!

  • Tracey M.

Saw an ad for this restaurant on the TV in our hotel room which made it look like something worth trying. I'm sorry we did! Service was horribly slow to basically non existent,. The fish in the baja fish tacos was burned and tasted old, and side dish of beans and rice was forgettable. Black bean soup appetizer was a tiny bowl of soupy black beans and shredded chicken. If your looking for good authentic Mexican food, definitely go elsewhere!!!

    (1)
  • Lexy G.

Ok but nothing great. A little expensive for Mexican food but overall enjoyed it. Nice little patio to sit on and key lime margarita was pretty good! Waiter was decent but not very friendly or personable. If you're looking for something low key and average this is your spot

  • Emily R.

Don't waste your time. Service was terrible. Every time we tried to call out server he would keep on waking and ignore us. There key lime Margarita was terrible. Overwhelmed with salt even though I asked for just a little bit of salt and you could barely taste the alcohol. I ordered the Mahi mahi enchiladas. It was probably the worst prepared fish I have ever had. Extremely dry, almost burnt. The server did ask if I wanted to try another type of fish when we finally caught his attention. But by then everyone else was almost done eating and I was pretty much fed up. I'm giving it 2 stars because my boyfriend's steak fajitas were pretty good but still not the best we've done. In summary, bad food, bad drinks, and bad service. There are far much better restaurants and key west.

    (2)
  • Kelly M.

Neat ambiance. That's all that this place has going for it. The guacamole is tasteless. Do NOT order the "taco salad". It's a bland plate of nachos topped with a few pieces of bad lettuce. Ugh. Mad I wasted money there and a dinner out in Key West nonetheless. So many other options.

    (1)
  • Chris M.

Es terrible!!! Where to begin... The chips and guacamole were terrible - overpriced and tasteless. As was the margarita which was watered down and flavorless. My wife had the taco "salad" which was a mess: tasteless tortilla chips, covered in tasteless cheese with a mound of lettuce on top of it. I had the chicken fajitas which were covered in oil and paired with traditional (?) cucumber and zucchini. The sides were also horrible: I had better black beans at the Chilis in the Fort Lauderdale airport. Avoid at all costs; a truly horrible experience.

  • Laura G.

Lots of food for the price. The Tostada and the smothered burrito are both excellent. Service was a little slow, but overall a good choice!

  • Jayson K.

Well my advice is to pass on this place. Overall experience was not good. From the moment we walked up to the hostess(who was not that friendly), to the attitude of the server.....all in all not friendly. With that being said I can get past that if the food is worth it, but in this case it isn't. The prices are a little pricey and the quality and taste isn't up to par. We have many local friends here and asked around about several recommendations and this one NEVER came up. Well we know why. If you want good Mexican food, keep looking. The locals don't like it and as a visitor I can see why.

    (1)
  • Steven P.

Jason on server was very pleasant and friendly. I had the chicken chipotle chimi and there was so much chicken! Perfect amount of heat and I licked the plate clean. But the best was the coconut flan. The best I've ever had. I would come back.

    (5)
  • Carmel U.

Our server was very nice but our food was way too salty. I ordered the seafood veracruz and could barely get through it. We ordered margaritas which tasted very much of generic mix and were way too sweet. We liked the outdoor seating and their salsa was good and spicy. My dinner left me feeling sick for most of the night. We will not be returning to this restaurant, unfortunately.

  • Damian V.

Well known local restauranteur Gail B hit a homerun with this one. Tex-Mex with a Caribbean flair in a local friendly environment. Try the chicken chipotle chimichanga or lime cilantro shrimp, both are instant classics...

    (5)
  • Mark B.

Service was ok. Not very friendly. Never brought More chips, had to ask for another beer. Fried Calamari was very tasted but really?? $7.75 for 8 rings!?!!!! The chicken mole quesadilla was good, hit fresh pulled chicken. Good sauce. Not the best Mexican food but surely not the worst.

Stopped in here for lunch one afternoon and were directed to a table, decent spot. The server was kind of indifferent. Wasn't into it when taking our drink orders. In fact, he took the other three drink orders and walked away while I was still deciding. I finally got to place my order, it was for a smoothie which was really good but it took a while to get even though they we're really busy. No biggie, it was tasty enough to not bug me. The chips and salsa were OK, chips kind of stale IMO. Everyone else at the table were enjoying but I think it was because we were all really hungry. Food: Really not that good. Fish tacos on hard shell? It was weird. The hard shells weren't even fresh tasting. Not sure but I think I remember buying some taco shells and leaving them out for a couple of weeks and then regretting eating them. Yea, that's kind of how I felt here. It's kind of my fault too cause I usually ask for corn tortilla and I didn't this time. The fish was not shredded but instead in huge chunks. It was definitely fresh and tasty once I smothered it with salsa. Didn't see the server much after receiving our food except when we called him over for our bill. There were only 3 tables. You're not that busy. All in all, I probably wouldn't eat here again unless I was super explicit about what I wanted on my dish.

When my fiancée got her tostada a bug was on top of her food. After we told our server we were told we had to pay for rest of the food we ordered because the bug was only on her plate. Not good service food was gross. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

  • Rick B.

This place is your typical Mexican or Tex-Mex place. The food is very good but I would not call it outstanding. The restaurant has a great outdoor ambiance right on Duval St. and the service was very good while we were there.

    (3)
  • Steve B.

In a word, this place "sucks". Crap food, weak drinks (the two of us bought a pitcher of margaritas and didn't leave with 1/2 a buzz) ... Lackadaisical staff.... Coming here was a mistake.... You've got options.... Exercise 'em

    (1)
  • Howard B.

THIS PLACE SUCKS We wanted more chips and they said that the first one was on the house and if we wanted more it would cost extra. One order came out after the rest of us were done. We went here in February and it SUCKED then but we thought we would try it one more time. And we will never go back. Don't wast your time or money going here. It is the worst place to eat. The Staff sucks just like the food. Do not go. don't wast your time or money.

  • Jenn A.

The location is really great and central on Duval. It was perfect to stop in for a drink and a snack on our Duval Crawl. The guacamole was really quite good. I can't say much else about the food unfortunatley as only had drinks and appetizers. I'm only giving 3 stars due to the service. It was really slow when we were there, I think there were 2 or 3 tables at any given time in the outside dining area so I know the server could have come around more. Either way, I'm sure we will be back to see what else is on the menu.

Good nachos, salsa is safe and very low spice. Good food, give them a shot.

our greeter couldn't have cared less, literally, if we ate at the restaurant. we were hungry so we stayed. the food was mediocre, the key lime margarita pre-mixed, and the service disgraceful bordering on rude.

  • Alesia S.

Very typical Americanized Mexican food. Nothing to brag about but nothing to complain about either. The pitcher of margaritas were a good deal.

    (3)
  • Susan C.

Wellllll...the food was actually quite delicious going down. I had the Chimichanga with spinach and beans. And my boyfriend had the chicken Quesadilla and loved it. Even the guacamole was very good - nice touch of lime. However, the staff was super odd. I still can't figure that out and can't find the words to describe it! Moreover, I vomitted as soon as I got home so that's why I'm giving this a low rating. I had a stomach ache all the next day too. Something was off in the food. I am vegan so maybe my stomach is a little sensitive...but something just wasn't right.

  • Drew W.

Nothing close to Mexican food. Did not taste fresh or authentic. Waiter passed several times no eye contact at all with any of the tables around us. We had to grab his arm on the way by....

Food and atmosphere are great! Try the cafe con leche ice cream... A slice of heaven!

Wait staff was horrible. The margaritas were Awful!! We decided to leave when we realized they couldn't make a proper drink. The waiter was very rude and didn't even stick around for 10 secs to get the whole order. There were 6 of us and as we walked in they were already telling us they wouldn't split the bill 3 times. Or we could only use 2 credit cards.

We had two nights in Key West, fancied Mexican food. It was ok, just average food. I think the main reason we popped in was it was one of the less busy places.

Great Mexican food ! Had the skirt steak . Yum . For dessert tried the flan and the key lime pie . Our server Jason was superb !!! Do try this place

  • Michele R.

Chips and salsa were good but you only get one for free. Guacamole was really good but expensive for a very small portion. Key lime margaritas were great. Service was just ok. Overall not the best or worst Mexican food - just adequate and probably not worth the cost.

    (3)
  • C. W.

Chips and salsa were really good. Enchiladas were good, but too big. I hate to waste food, but had to leave half the plate there. However, our waiter seemed to wish he was somewhere else. He never smiled and spoke with no enthusiasm. He probably wondered why he got such a low tip. If you're out on the deck, don't drop chips on the ground for the little chicks; they can't break them up with their small beaks. They do, however, love it if you give them black beans from your plate. Gobbled them up like candy.

    (3)
  • Carolina W.

Here's a tip: unless you're shitfaced like half the red-faced idiot tourists on Duval Street, do not eat here. Our server (the bartender) was very attentive and sweet, but when the three black bean "tacos" came out of the kitchen only 5 minutes after we'd ordered them, I knew something was wrong. This is the kind of place Gordon Ramsey would have a field day in. He would take one look at the plate we ordered not be able to find the indistinguishable tacos under a mound of lettuce and pick at the pimento olive adorned guacamole and say "you should rename this restaurant Casa de Crap."

Now why would anyone eat Mexican in Key West? Because all other places offer the same salads, sandwiches, wraps and Conch fritters. We wanted something else and as we checked the menu a local told us the food was great. So it helped us make our decision. In we went and we were greeted by a host that was a bit preoccupied with something. The restaurant had a decent amount of people but it wasn't packed. We ordered a pitcher of Key Lime Margaritas. It was very good, was made of real Key Lime juice and not a mix. It was good, but low on the Tequila. We ordered Conch Fritters for an appetizer (yea, yea I know, I know what I said above, however we WERE in Key West), Chicken Enchiladas, Mahi Mahi Enchiladas. We waited an awful long time for the appetizer, the chips and salsa were good and finally our Fritters came out. The Chipotle Sauce to dip them in was a huge disappointment as it was Ketchup with Chipotle, to the point where it was laughable how obvious it was. As soon as we were digging in, our food came out too. The server was apologizing to us about it, and it honestly seemed like they had forgotten our appetizers under a hot light. Now as for the food, I must say that anyone who would call this "Not authentic" needs to go to a modern restaurant in Mexico City. Cancun doesn't count. American Mexican doesn't count. And the Mexican Place on the corner with your basic Mexican (albeit delicious) doesn't count either. Otherwise you would miss out on the fact that it IS Mexican with a very modern flare. Even though I didn't love the fritter sauce I found the food to be very exciting. Sure it is spicy - but not outrageously so. The Chicken Enchiladas could have used more of the Tomatillo Sauce and less Cheese but they were super good. They were stuffed with Chicken and the MahiMahi had a nice rich Mole Sauce that made it interesting. I must say I did prefer the Chicken.

Terrible service, 1 waiter with 8 tables going. Drinks were practically non-alcoholic. The salsa was very acidic while the guacamole had absolutely no flavor. The chips seemed stale. We left soon after ordering the drinks. If a Mexican restaurant has bad guacamole I guarantee the food will be subpar as well. Great location and atmosphere though. That gets it the one star..

THIS PLACE IS HORRIBLE. AVOID AVOID AVOID! We stopped in for drinks and appetizers and sat at the bar. We ordered the Old Town Nachos and they were amateur at best. My boyfriend and I had two margaritas each (in a relatively short time period) and I can guarantee (he is a bartender) that there was NO ALCOHOL in any of them!!! They pour the margaritas out of a pitcher that sits on the bar -- you're drinking margarita mix without the booze -- we paid over $50 for crap nachos and four drinks. The place is practically run by high school students. They should train the bartender (Seth, when we went) how to actually make drinks. It's Key West, for crying out loud -- people like a decent cocktail! I'll never eat NOR drink here ever ever again (and we're frequent Key West-ers)!!

Cool location, great patio seating with over hanging trees and string lights. Ambiance was a 10. Cute Czech waitress with a badonka-donk, super friendly and very attentive. Dolphin Tacos tasted like cardboard and burnt chipotle sauce. My friends dish was DELISH though, cilantro lime fish with chipolte mash potatoes and fried kale. YUM! There isn't much consistency with the food quality here. The chips and salsa are free for the first round, they were pretty good. Pitcher of margarita was FULL of ice cubes, and our glasses were FULL of ice cubes. The best deal was 5 beers for $12 mix and match from modelo, dos equis, corona, pacifico etc.

My only "ehhh" place we went to in Key West. We wanted a change of pace for dinner that night. The reviews for Amigos looked great, but the seating was not very big. So with Mexcican still on our minds, we walked over to here. The food was ok, my fish was burned a little and the hard shell tacos were not great. The rice was nice and spicy but just warm. The quesadillas are huge. The margarita was a little too sweet. Service was so-so, she checked on us but we waited a while for our drinks. Plus I thought it was a tad bit pricey. I'd check out Amigos (or maybe skip Mexican food next time and go to a Cuban place).

Third rate food. Shouldn't salsa at least taste like it had hot peppers in the same room where it was made? It was tasteless. The chips were not good either. I had a beef tostado. Canned guacamole. Strange spices. Why call it Mexican. Decided to have a wild lunch time and have a margarita. So salty I wondered if they accidentally spilled the salt meant for the rim of the glass in the drink. Why did I even try mexican food in Key West?

KEY LIME PIE! This review is solely based on the key lime pie. After copious research on Key Lime Pie and at least one piece of pie/day I conclude the following: -It actually tastes like LIME!!!!!!!! In case you missed the title of the pie. -(crucial) it has a meringue!!!!!!! If you look up Conch key lime original pie you'll see that it's in the recipe (not like Kermit's dollops of whipped cream who consequently got beat in Throw-down with Bobby Flay and it's easy to see why). -(equally crucial) it has a REAL pie crust!!!!!!!!! It does not have some Oreo cookie crust or graham cracker crust, etc. the owner gave us a piece after we got married and explained its been the same for 35 years here. Recap: it actually tastes like lime!!! it's got a good meringue and a REAL pie crust. Side note: salmon tacos were actually OK!

Yum times a MILLION! Really cute place, we sat outdoors because the weather was beautiful and we shared an entree because the portions were quite large. Lots of chickens walking around.

Hostess was New and you could tell. Large parties had a hard time doe them to just push tables together. We just had us two. I got the key lime margarita which wasn't good. I had the fish tacos which were awesome and why they are getting a three and not a two. Chris had chicken fajitas which were good. Drinks not good. Salsa is awesome here.

Uumm... This place needs a major customer service check, lacks big time or should I say non-existent - You could literally dine and drive out of there - Moving on to the food they brought out chips and salsa which was ok - Wanted to try a new app the chorizo queso dip - Waiter said that they were out so we ordered the calamari - I know calamari isn't what you find in your average Mexican restaurant, but nothing else seemed appealing on the menu. It was over battered mini chunks - I don't know what they battered it with or spices they used but it was not good even with the dipping sauce that came with it which I might add was horrible - Next the entrees - Fiance had the fajitas - Came out with three slabs of strip steaks and three shrimp along side your sauteed onions and peppers and toppings - I tried a bite - Lacked flavored - Way to oily - Have to say that though I don't care for Chili's, Chili's fajitas is better than what my fiance ate - Arent fajitas suppose to come out sizzling if it's serviced in cast iron skillets? On the other hand - I ordered the fish tacos which were fried - I have to say that they were pretty good - The crunch from the cabbage and the crispness from the fish - Though my food was decent from the rest and the customer service being 'non-existent' - I will not be coming here again next.

While strolling down Duval street we got "bit" by the Mexican food bug, in fact as we were studying the menu a local casually walked by and totally recommended the food. We started out with a Pitcher of Margarita, however, if your thing is getting drunk for real cheap - skip it ! The margarita was good, but not packed with Tequila, which we found totally appropriate, but our thing is not getting drunk anyway. The food was good, the portions are quite generous, and we found the prices to be reasonable considering you are in Key West right on Duval street- I had the chicken enchiladas and they were spicier than expected, which I personally prefer, but I can see how someone may be taken aback if not warned ahead of time. All in all ... the place is OK... but I would respectfully submit that while in Key West ... having Mexican food is probably not the best choice, if you are looking for authentic.

Looked nice when we walked up, staff was just horrible, had no concern with customers, just talked amongst themselves, our bucket of beer sat at the bar for over 10mins while the bar tender and waitress talked. Food was okay, they need bigger plates, took too long, and no one seemed glad to be at work, must have manager problems because these employees do not care about their jobs

Quality Mexican fare on upper Duval. Old Town is a pleasant open-air restaurant serving up Mexican goodness. Ambiance is low-key and intimate for the most part. We had the garden burrito, chicken fajitas and salmon tacos along with a pitcher of key lime margaritas. The food was delicious and fresh with only a hint of spicyness. The margaritas weren't fully loaded but we didn't expect as much. The only complaint (and this is a small one) is that our chicken was a little undercooked. Good service from our European waitress and the rest of the staff that we dealt with were professional and cool. A very good experience we plan on repeating next time we're in Key West.

This place is a total suprise - looks like a shithole on Duval, yet when you walk in the service is very good and the food is..actually excellent! I ate there TWICE in one trip - we had calamari, chicken enchiladas, crabcakes, and some other stuff I can't remember, but all of it was tasty, filling, and CHEAP. It's outdoor, so that's nice, and sits in the middle of Duval, so you don't have to go far if you want to keep walking and have a drink somewhere else. The sangria is pretty good, by the way. So if your expectations are low, it's awesome. If you walk in with some snobby attitude and start comparing it to whatever local Mexican place you're abnormally in love with back in your Texan shit-excuse-for-a-city, you'll suffer a tragic ending to your evening.

Coming from Arizona you would think Mexican would be furthest from our minds to try in Key West. This was mostly true until it was 9:30 pm and we read the menu... I had the chicken mole quesadilla - though I longed for more mole sauce, this was one of the best quesadillas I have ever had. Lots of well seasoned chicken and cheese and a crispy tortilla. My guapo partner in crime had the spinach and black bean burrito that not only looked amazing on the plate but was also well stocked with yummy goodness inside and spectacular smoky adobo sauce on the side. We of course had to have dessert and let our quest for key lime pie over come the urge for the Godiva chocolate brownie. The coffee ice cream ala mode was a treat but sad to say the meringue on the pie was no bueno. Decent pie, but not the best we had. Good salsas, chips and service and great outside seating under a huge tree - can't really beat it, even in AZ.

I love ordering vegetarian dishes when I go out to eat even though I'm not a vegetarian. I had their veggieladas and they were SO, SO good! Even the beans on the side had something special about them that made me keep eating until they were gone. My son and boyfriend both had their fajitas and were happy as well. We have eaten here multiple times and I rate it 5 stars because anytime I was hungry for Mexican while here I would think about this place....thats a good compliment :)

I had a very nice family experience. Our group consisted of six adults, two children and one infant. The food and service was great and the atmosphere was good. The only major downside is the parking in the Duval Street area, but there isn't much they can do about that.

I read the reviews after we ate here. Good thing since we probably would have passed on it. We had a great experience. We were there early and only another couple was dining. The waiter was very friendly. The food was good too. Chicken chipotle chimi is very hot! But good!

My Guy had been here before and he told me to check it out.. well i did and i DIDN'T LIKE IT !!! The salsa didn't taste like anything , the chips were from a bag, i ordered the tostada and on the menu it NEVER said it was spicy and then i got them they were so spicy i had to order extra sour cream .. and they charged me for it !!!! I can't stand when restaurants nickle and dime customers. this place gets 2 stars for my drink the Mexican milkshake! yummy

WORST DINING EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! Not only was the food completely un-authentic and terribly spicy, but the service was even worse!!! No one in our party liked their food. We waited a long time to get our drinks (which was mostly water!) and food, and when we finally received our food one of the dishes was wrong! The last dish took even longer to come out. The waiters were very rude and completely disrespectful. We didn't think the server deserved 18% gratuity so we asked for the manager. Who came to our table as "the manager" was completely rude and unprofessional. We later resolved things with the real manager. The thought that another waiter would pose as a manager to save another's butt was completely insulting!!!!! We were excited to go in to eat what we thought was authentic Mexican food, but we were so wrong! The very rude staff was the tip of the iceberg!!! Please do yourself a favor and choose another restaurant if you want to have a nice dining experience in Key West.

Happened to see this place while strolling down Duval Street and popped in. The staff was friendly enough, and the food was decent, but not great. The salsa was watery, and the spice in my chicken fajitas seemed to come from unnecessary pepper flakes. Otherwise, I wouldn't avoid this place, but I wouldn't rush to go back, either.

Food was great and there was a lot of it! It is a little pricey, but most things are in Key West! The queso was yummy, the beer was cold, all in all it's a winner!

TERRIBLE! I know, why am I eating Mexican in Key West? Well, we just got into town late and wanted to save the seafood and such for when we have more time. So walking up and down Duval street looking for something to eat we said, lets do Mexican tonight. So we swung in after looking at the menu. I am not going to even try to sugar coat this but the food sucked! The queso dip had no taste at all as well as the steak quesadilla I had. My wife's chicken burrito was HUGE and had huge chunks of chicken inside plus it was filled some type of lettuce, beans, onions and peppers. Not your typical burrito but i had no taste at all and grossed my wife out to the point where she just could not eat it. I have had better Mexican at Taco Bell. The service was slow and our waiter never came around. Plus when finished with our meal we waited a good 15 minutes for the check. On the positive side the salsa that came with the 1 free basket of chips (you must way $4 for another basket of chips) was good and my Bud Light was refreshing. I find it hard to understand how you an screw up Mexican food so bad and next time your in Key West and want Mexican, find another place or your out of luck.

Okay, after reading other people's reviews of this place you may doubt me. I am bummed others had such a terrible experience because I agree with Dean A that the Old Town Mexican Cafe was very good. It is the only place on the island that doesn't use a crappy mix for their margaritas and used real lime and other citrus juice (not sure if they were key limes) and they are DELICIOUS! Excellent Ceviche and their Oaxaca Quesadilla was outstanding. Nice pieces of shrimp in both and a great balance of jalapeno, tomato and cilantro. When we were first seated I was a bit nervous that the service was going to be lackluster. To be honest one waitress may have been so abrasive that I think one of her tables got up and left only after drinks. The initial experience with our waiter seemed like it might go the same direction after we placed our drink order; however, he immediately warmed up to us after delivery of the drinks and was fabulous for the rest of our meal.

After reading the reviews, I was disappointed that a few people had bad experiences here. I've been to Key West twice for a total of 4 days and have eaten here 3 times. Each time, the owner graciously seated me. She's a lovely woman. The food is amazing, especially the Carne Adovoda. Try the Sangria as well.

Really good fresh salsa! There are quite a few vegetarian options and I had the black bean tacos which were really good on a hot day. My husband ordered the salmon sandwich and the piece of salmon was huge! Throughout my stay, I found very few restaurant workers to be super friendly or warm. The same goes for this place, but the salsa made up for that. Oh and I loved the outdoor setting. We were outside on a really hot day but the shade and fans made it really comfortable. Plus there were baby chicks running around which provided me with a little entertainment :)

Walked in after walking past this restaurant on Duval St and had the worst meal of our trip. We were greeted by a snarky waiter (the only one for the entire place) who did not fill our glasses with water and instead berated us for asking questions about the menu. The food was abysmal. We ordered a queso only to be served microwaved melted cheese. Our salmon tacos were dry and overcooked, AND came in a hard taco shell (a big no-no for any restaurant claiming to be Mexican). Even the free chips were stale and smelt of rancid oil. After this less than stellar meal, we skipped dessert altogether and beat a hasty retreat. The only redeeming factor was the location and the outdoor seating.

A group of us went here for dinner, and first off just the look of the place with the lights, out door seating and fans at every few feet, we were hooked. The food was a little on the pricey side for Mexican, but it was really good and worth it. First off the salsa is fresh and was gone in seconds. We have been to so many Mexican restaurants over the years, but this one by far had the best nachos I have had any where. We had those, the burrito, and fish tacos. Everyone was pleased and happy to start the night on Duval.

Showed up at this restaurant at around 10:20 PM and was informed that the kitchen closes at 10:30 PM. Normally I don't stay with the kitchen closing in ten minutes as your chances of receiving a present from the chef in your food increases ten-fold. The hostess, however, insisted we stay and that it'd be no problem, although I'm fairly positive that I still received the chef's personal thanks with my meal, but I can't blame him. Our waitress (the hostess) was very sweet and told us to take our time. She brought out warm chips and homemade salsa and both were decent. Being the macho man that I am, I ordered the sangria, which was very refreshing and one of the better Sangrias that I've had, not saying that I drink them a lot. My friend ordered a margarita which was average. Generally the menu looked good, but with the abundance of dolphin meat options I was surprised not to see the Dolphin Conservation Society picketing outside the gates. Ultimately I chose the crab and shrimp burrito while my friend got the blackened chicken with rice. The burrito comes with a dab of guacamole, which you will want to use as otherwise the burrito, while good in theory, was fairly basic and a bit bland. The same holds true for the chicken, which was tender but lacked much flavor. The environment was nice as we sat outside under the stars with the fans blowing our general direction. The prices were pretty average for Key West, certainly not above what I would expect to pay there. If the food were more fresh and had a little more flavor then I would highly recommend this restaurant. As a side note my friend and I were not the last to leave, there was a table of drunken gringos polishing off a bucket of Coronas; those don't usually come with a worm in the bottle do they?

This was our first stop once we got out of the car. Not bad! Drinks were good, and the food was fine. Not spectacular, but what do you expect "gourmet" Mexican food(if that even exists) while sitting on cheap green lawn furniture? I think our waitress was drunk, but then again, it was Cinco De Mayo, and everyone else at our table was tipsy ;)

This is your average "Mexican" restaurant that has been completely ruined by making it American-friendly. The food was all really bland even though I asked for an extra spicy dish to preempt this.

Stars deducted for Margarita fake out! This place is super cute. Open air, great place to sit and watch the world go by. The food was excellent. Fish tacos were among the better ones in KW. HOWEVER, we found that the margaritas they serve contain NO tequila! Upon tasting it, we asked if we could even buy a shot to add to our drinks and were informed they don't have a permit to serve hard alcohol. We are passionate about our margaritas, so this was a HUGE let down. The waiter happily replaced it with a bucket of Pacifico. If you're not into margaritas, enjoy the amazing food and setting.

Food was mediocre. I ordered steak fajitas and they weren't even grilled, they were sauteed and thrown on a sizzling plate. The sizzling metal plate was oddly placed on another plate. And the margaritas were like lime juice.

After walking by a number of times with my family, we decided it looked nice, usually with a wait, so we'd give it a try. Read other Yelps and thought it was worth it. The hostess was very friendly and nearly apologized for the 5 minute wait. A very nice couple moved from their 4 top to the 2 top near the front rail so we could have their table (thank you!). Waitress took our drink order and mentioned the specials with little or no enthusiasm(personality). The chips and salsa were good, salsa tasted fresh and homemade. My wife's margarita was "enh" and my Corona was cold. We added the queso dip as an app. It was a little thin and the cheese was not melted and had little flavor. Between us we had fish tacos, chicken fajita burrito with red sauce, beef machaka burrito with green sauce and chicken fajitas. My chicken fajita burrito was a little over powered by the spice (and I like spicy but it was too much). We thought it strange the fish tacos were in hard shells. They also seemed to have the same seasoning as everything else on the table. Chicken in the fajitas was a bit dry and also over spiced. Beef burrito was not well received by my daughter as it "tasted funny" Place has great potential, nice patio, good people watching from our seats but needs to step up the food quality. My wife made the comment that "it's like someone wanted to be in the restaurant business but just doesn't know how yet..."

This is a really solid place for a comfortable and affordable meal in Key West. While they may not stand out in any significant way, it's worth a trip if you're in the mood for Mexican. I tried a spicy chicken dish, which was actually pretty good. The sauce was a bit thick, but the chicken was well-cooked and it was sufficiently spicy. They have a surprisingly good crab-cake appetizer here, as well. I thought they had one of the better sangrias in Key West, really tasty and cold... but, they serve it with lots of ice which means you wind up getting a lot less than it looks per pitcher. It also felt a bit weak, but it was pretty cheap so I wasn't complaining. Overall, good place to stop in if you're passing by.

Dinner for two on Saturday. We finally settled on this place after trawling up and down Duval street something like 5 times. We only waited 10 minutes, but the restaurant was packed. Strange because there was a whole room of seating inside that they weren't using - offseason layout, i guess? Queso was ,for lack of any other descriptor...amazing. I had the fish tacos - in which they use "dolphin." I still have no idea what exactly that is, except for delicious - flaky, moist, PERFECTLY seared and just a hint of paprika-like spice. In fact, all of their dishes had this subtle, and very unique heat to them. My friend had the chicken burrito (spicy). And I thought it was tasty. If I'm ever back in the area - I'd get the pork chops. An order floated by on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and I had a distinct pang of food envy. ahhh...next time (I had been in the mood for fish). Margaritas were tasty as well. Had I not had a long drive back to Miami, I would've tried the sangria too... Why the 4 stars? They only give you 1 free bowl of chips, but charge thereafter. Which, considering how good their queso is, can easily add up. I think it's funny that the only two people to review this random, otherside of country restaurant are from the bay area. Then again, given the popularity (or lack there of) of yelp in Miami, i suppose that I shouldn't be surprised.

At here for dinner. Fish tacos in a hard shell not so great. Chips were stale but salsa was good. My soda water tasted like dirty tap water. I would not eat here again?

Food was very good, and the patio very pleasant. The service sets this place back in the stars rankings- just not acceptable- this is a popular place and needs to be staffed appropriately. I suggest visiting in low volume windows of time- perhaps better staff-to-diners ratio. Good drinks and nice selection of options, including for vegetarians.

what was i thinking... getting mexican food in key west? seriously? why wasn't i at a cuban restaurant or eating some lobster?? still to this day, i have no idea what was going through my mind when i agreed to go here. we came here after watching the beautiful sunset at the key west pier.. all outdoor seating - niiice.. the menu look like mexican .. but when our fajitas came out.. i was a little confused.. i'm used to the onions, pepper, and beef trio.. but at old town mexican cafe they added zucchinis, mushrooms and some other veggie.. the seasoning was a bit bland but red and saucy, as if it were stir fried and placed on the stone platter. coming from california this did not look like any fajita i know about. my husband ate it, but he eats anything so that doesn't say much. we also ordered guacamole - which was just as disappointing as the fajitas, tasteless and full of onions.. i'm asian and i can honestly say my guacamole is better than this - even if i made mine blind folded.. luckily we beat the dinner crowd and didn't have to wait long. i'm giving them two stars for trying and for the awesome seating.

Horrible place to eat. Outside sign advertised special for drinks and food. We went inside sat down and was informed after we bought the drink special that we had to buy an entree and a appetizer otherwise we would be charged full price. Too bad this wasn't stated outside. All in all the place has horrible service, and the salsa was bland. Go to Salsa Locas way better. Was there the night before and they didn't need to trick people into coming inside fir business.

Some of the best Mexican food we ever had! It is so pleasant to sit outside, sip margaritas and people watch. The food is excellent quality and reasonably priced. We eat here at least once every time we are in Key West.

Pleasant atmosphere, decent service, reasonably priced and good food. I had a taco salad with grilled shrimp, my husband had the shrimp and crab burrito. The waiter was a little low key but we were in no hurry. Definitely save room for the banana burrito for dessert.

Cute patio with a huge tree growing up through the floor. Only liquor available are pre-mixed Margaritas. No tequila is available to "doctor" it up. We ordered the chicken fajitas. The flavor was great and the vegetables were crisp. However, the chicken was cut into chunks too large for the tortillas. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

The wait was incredibly long on a Thursday night around 6:00 (there were five of us and all the table sit four - they ended up putting two tables together - a round one and a square one, which did not make a comfortable dinner). The server was initially a total ass and then later was just snarky. The food was surprisingly good, but maybe we were just so hungry after waiting so long...I had the veggie tostadas.

Mexican Cuisine
